Anticipations of a Bright Tomorrow is an exploration of the image of the future in East German science fiction. In the present volume, Looking Back at the Bright Tomorrow, we have a closer look at specific questions: How did censorship – and self-censorship – work in the field of science fiction? What image of the future was presented in the only comic magazine series Mosaik von Hannes Hegen? Which kinds of fantasy, or fantastic literature, was published in the GDR? The volume contains also essays and reviews written under socialist rule, that nevertheless have retained their value. It closes with a tongue-in-cheek experiment: Which stories should be included in an omnibus “Best of East German SF Stories”?
